Beyond Horizons

Beyond Horizons at King Charles I School

As a school we pride ourselves of giving every student the opportunity to outshine and be the best they can.  We provide a diverse range opportunities and experiences which equips and prepares students with the social and cultural capital needed to compete.  We believe it is about instilling knowledge, sparking curiosity, building confidence and broadening horizons.

We encourage all students to work hard, be resilient and persevere when they are faced with challenges.  As well as an excellent set of academic qualifications, students need to be in a position to ‘outshine’ other students when applying for a college or university place, an apprenticeship or a job.  They can do this by getting involved and immersing themselves in the wide range of opportunities offered to them at school.

What do we offer at King Charles I School for students to get involved in to ‘broaden their horizons’?

  • House competitions – all students are allocated a house that they belong to (Chads, Blounts or Queens). Regular competitive activities take place throughout the year that all students can get involved in.  The activities accumulate points for each house and at the end of the academic year the prestigious cup is awarded to the winning house. Please click here to see a full list of the house competition events for this autumn term.

  • Extra-curricular activities programme – a full and diverse programme of activities in many different subject areas run throughout the week at lunchtime and after school that all students can get involved in. These activities range from maths challenges, learning a language, music, textiles, STEM activities, Duke of Edinburgh and many more. Please click here to see a full list of the extra-curricular activities for this autumn term.

  • Sporting events – a wide variety of sporting activities, including competitions run throughout the week at lunchtime and afterschool that all students can get involved in. Please click here to see a full list of the sporting activities and competitions for this autumn term.

  • Cultural experiences – a large number of trips run throughout the academic year. These include international trips to Paris, Iceland, New York, Cologne and Belgium.  There are trips to London and other places in the UK, along with more local trips to Birmingham museums, the Symphony Hall and the NEC.

  • University activities – throughout the year universities will come into school and speak with students from all year about aspects of applying and going to university. There are also visits to university campuses, residential opportunities and masterclass for students to become involved in.  We are very fortunate to have some excellent links with a number of the top universities in the UK.  These include: Oxford, Cambridge and Birmingham.

  • Careers – throughout the year students are involved in a wide range of career related activities. These include: careers fairs, careers talks, careers workshops, assemblies involving employers, apprenticeship talks and activities, mock interviews, enterprise activities, skill shows and work experience.
