As part of the Lessons from Auschwitz program we got to experience one day in Poland and visited the sites Auschwitz 1 and Auschwitz-Birkenau. We learned about pre-war Jewish life in the local town of which the camps are named and saw what life was like inside the camps for the Jews. We heard first hand testimonies of people who survived and also had the opportunity to read extracts from reports and diaries that had been hidden in hope that one day someone would find them. We attended a memorial service in memory of those who lost their lives and lit candles at the memorial at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

It was an eye opening experience for us and we are grateful for being given the opportunity to take part in the program and pass on the messages of those who survived.
